Two Sides of Pride: Building Self-Esteem to Open a Network of Opportunities

What are some things you do to make yourself feel proud? Hubristic pride is the kind that leads to narcissism and arrogance. Authentic pride, on the other hand, is the kind of healthy self-esteem that comes from doing something good and feeling good about it. We need both types of pride in our lives to feel good about ourselves, but we should try to minimize the amount of hubristic pride we experience and focus more on authentic pride. Research shows that there are two sides of pride that can represent emotions. (1) Authentic pride (beta) is pride that is adaptive and a response to events which specific. (2) Hubristic pride (alpha) which is less pleasant, tends to appear in various situations, maladaptive, and over time. There is words associated that can explain or is commonly used to express such pride. The two are also correlated, for example authentic pride is related to the constructs of emotional stability and agreeableness or hubristic pride is related to narcissism and shame-proneness. Authentic pride is more likely bring people to the experience of positive way in order to express an emotion, meanwhile the other type could help achieving dominance.
